Although a native of Cincinnati, Sylvia grew up in and around Lexington and has spent most of her life in this area. She attended her first opera, Aida, at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome in 1957. She was forever hooked on opera. Her next opera was La Traviata at the Bolshoi. The soprano had stainless steel teeth! She received her PhD in German Studies from the University of Cincinnati in 1969 and taught German and Humanities at Eastern Kentucky University for 35 years. One serendipitous evening after retirement she sat next to Mayor Pam Miller at an event at Singletary. After some discussion, Mayor Miller invited her to join the board of the Lexington Opera Society, now OperaLex. Over the intervening years she has served as OperaLex secretary, corresponding secretary and Bravo Guild president. She is presently BravoLex copy editor. Her hobbies are reading, listening to music and traveling. Most of her immediate family lives here in Lexington.
