Melissa Skaggs is a native Kentuckian with a love for music and singing. She pursued and received a degree in both Vocal Performance and Arts Administration from the University of Kentucky where she studied with Dr. Everett McCorvey, the late Gail Robinson, and Dr. Jefferson Johnson. As a student at U.K., Melissa was an active member of the Opera department, playing the role of Musetta in LaBoheme, and participating in the chorus of The Magic Flute, L’Elizer D’amore and Die Fledermaus. She served as President of the Kentucky Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota. As a member of the choral program, she performed with the Women’s Chorus, Chorister’s Chorale, and Paws and Listen, a women’s a capella group. Melissa interned with Spoleto Festival USA and the Singletary Center for the Arts in Marketing and Public Relations. After graduation, she spent a brief time as Office Manager for the Merrimack Repertory Theater in Lowell, Massachusetts, after which she accepted a position with the Delta Queen Steamboat Company, performing on the Mississippi Queen. She joined the Kentucky Music Educators association staff in 2006 in the role of Associate Director. KMEA organizes the state school music activities of State Marching Band Championships, All-State Ensembles, concert assessments and an annual teacher professional development conference.

Melissa is married to Matthew Skaggs, Band Director at Frederick Douglass High School. She is very active in her church, serving as Youth Committee Chair, singing in the praise band and choir. She enjoys vacationing with her family, cooking, walking her dogs, singing for weddings and special events, and especially being a mother (chauffeur) to her daughter.
