Dr. Wolfgang Korsch was born in the central part of former West Germany. He attended a high school that focused on the arts, especially music, classic languages, and sciences—a real “humanistisches Gymnasium.” Although Wolfgang has always been fascinated by classical music, his main interest is science.
Growing up, he played the trumpet in a few brass ensembles and in the local high school orchestra. After graduating from high school and one year of military service, he enrolled as a physics major at the Philipps-University of Marburg, one of the 10 oldest universities in Germany. After his undergraduate studies, he pursued a Ph.D. in nuclear physics at the Max-Planck Institute in Heidelberg. At the end of his Ph.D. studies, he met a lovely woman, Dr. Susan Gardner, whom he married in 1998 after receiving his Ph.D. Wolfgang was a research scientist at MIT in Cambridge, MA, and at Caltech in Pasadena, CA, for a few years before joining the physics faculty in the UK in 1996.
Living in Lexington, Susan and Wolfgang find immense joy in their shared enthusiasm for the UK Opera program. They are delighted to serve as board members of OperaLex, reflecting their interest in the local arts scene. In his leisure time, Wolfgang indulges in his love for cycling, often participating in organized bike rides that offer a unique perspective of Kentucky’s stunning natural beauty.
